The MCP + CLI Litmus Test for Go-to-Market Tools

If your tools cannot be automated programmatically, you are paying for clicks


Why Programmatic Access Matters

Every GTM tool has a GUI. Click here, drag there, export CSV. That is table stakes. The real question is whether the tool can be operated without the GUI. Can an agent call it? Can a script trigger it? Can a cron job run it at 2 AM while nobody is watching? This is the MCP + CLI litmus test. MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers expose tool functionality to AI agents. CLI (command line interface) access lets scripts and automation trigger operations. A tool that has both can be embedded in pipelines, orchestrated by agents, and scaled without human clicks. A tool that only has a GUI requires a human in the loop for every operation. That is fine for 10 leads. It breaks at 1000. A go-to-market engineer evaluates tools by their automation ceiling, not their demo.
PATTERN

The Three-Level Test

Level 1 - API access. Does the tool have a documented REST API with proper authentication? Can you make a curl request and get structured data back? Most modern tools pass this. If they do not, that is an immediate red flag. Level 2 - CLI tooling. Is there an official command-line interface? Can you run operations from a terminal without opening a browser? This is rarer. HubSpot has it. Vercel has it. Most outreach tools do not. Level 3 - MCP server. Does the tool ship an MCP server or have a community-maintained one? Can an AI agent like Claude Code interact with it natively? This is the cutting edge. PostHog, Attio, Slack, and GitHub have MCP servers. Most GTM tools are still at Level 1 only. The go-to-market engineer scores every tool in the stack on these three levels. A tool at Level 3 is fully automatable. A tool stuck at Level 1 requires custom integration work. A tool with no API access at all is a liability.
ANTI-PATTERN

Tools That Pass vs. Tools That Fail

Tools that pass the test: HubSpot (API + CLI + MCP), Apollo (API + MCP), GitHub (API + CLI + MCP), Vercel (API + CLI), PostHog (API + MCP). These tools can be fully embedded in automated pipelines. Tools that partially pass: Clay (API but limited - most power is in the GUI table builder), Instantly (API for campaign management but not for analytics), HeyReach (API for basic operations, no CLI or MCP). Tools that fail: any tool where the only way to operate is through the web interface. If you cannot export data programmatically, if you cannot trigger campaigns via API, if you cannot pull analytics without logging in - you are locked into manual operations. That does not scale. The failing grade does not mean the tool is bad. It means the tool has an automation ceiling. A go-to-market engineer factors that ceiling into the stack decision.

Applying the Test to Your Stack

Run the test on your current stack right now. List every tool. For each one, check: does it have an API? Is there a CLI? Is there an MCP server? Score each tool 0-3. Then look at the pattern. If your enrichment tool scores 3 but your outreach tool scores 0, you have a bottleneck. The pipeline is only as automated as its weakest link. A go-to-market engineer identifies these bottlenecks and either replaces the tool, builds custom integrations to bridge the gap, or documents the manual steps so the team knows where human intervention is required. The goal is not to eliminate all manual work. The goal is to make manual work a choice, not a constraint. You should be clicking because it adds value, not because the tool gives you no other option.
